It’s going to be a rough summer. I was able to speak to a doctor at the endocrinologist’s office since our doctor is on vacation. Would have been nice if someone told me that the first time I called. I described K’s symptoms and she agreed that K is showing signs of hyperthyroidism. That’s happening because she was initially so extremely HYPOthyroid and went to the normal range so quickly. Her body is still adjusting. Well, what I’d like to know is why wasn’t she eased onto the dosage? Why start her so high? I mean, half of her hair is gone! We reduced her dosage a little bit, but the damage is done. Even yesterday, she wouldn’t nap so by dinner time she was falling asleep at the table. I managed to get her to eat a little bit, but had to put her to bed by 6:15. She woke up around midnight, then every two hours after that, including at 4 am because she was starving. I had to give her yogurt because I was afraid her blood sugar would drop. Then she was up for the day at 6:45. It’s like having a newborn again.
The doctor said we’d have to ride out the symptoms. I guess I should be thankful that it’s happening during the summer and she’s home. I can’t wait until her doctor gets back so I can understand his reasoning. When we asked him what side effects there would be, he said none. I get that the body needs to adjust, but it would have been nice to have my expectations set.
